CLAY BIRDHOUSES

OBJECTIVE:  THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CONSTRUCT A BIRDHOUS USING THE SLAB CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE.

PROCEDURES:

1. Sketch 3 dimensional examples of a birdhouse or feeder.

2.  Construct a 3 dimensional model from paper. This will later serve as your pattern.

3. Roll slabs from clay.

4.  Use the paper patterns and cut slabs.

5.  Attach the slabs using all three methods of joining clay.

6.  The birdhouse must be able to hang.

Remember :  Birds will use a house with an opening only large enough for him to enter. This keeps larger birds and prey out and makes a safer place to raise their young.

PIGGY BANKS

OBJECTIVE:  THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CREATE A PIGGY BANK USING 2 CLAY PINCH POTS.

PROCEDURES:

1.       Wedge the clay and check for air bubbles.

2.     Make 2 pinch pots that are approximately the same size.  Walls should not be more than ½ inch thick.

3.     Join the two pinch pots using all three hand building methods (score, slip, seam).

4.     After completing the hollow body, complete the form by adding limbs, tails, horns, manes, and other details.

5.     While the clay is leather hard, carefully cut a coin slot large enough to insert coins.  Allow for shrinkage.

6.     If you want to remove the coins without breaking the bank, cut a round hole on the underside.  This will later be stuffed with a sponge or cork.

7.     Dry.

8.     Fire.

9.     Glaze.

10.                        Refire.

Pop Art

Objective: The student will be able to create a Pop Art sculpture from clay using food as a subject.

Pop Art= a style of art in which the artist uses a popular subject for a work of art

Procedures:

1.     Find and cut out magazine pictures of food to serve as your inspiration. Select 5. Desserts are a good choice.

2.   Construct the food from clay using the most feasible method of hand construction.

3.   Turn in the piece to be fired.  Put your first and last name on the bottom of the work.

4.   After the work has been fired, paint the piece as realistically as possible.

5.   You must display your food item in an appropriate manner to be displayed at “Art’s Diner.”

Glue your selection of what you would like to make in the space below or on the back.  How will you make each part of the food item?

Your picture should be in front of you the entire time you are constructing or painting you food sculpture.

BJECTIVE:  The student will be able to create his name using three-dimensional letters which meet at a vanishing point.

PRODEDURES

1.    Practice drawing three dimensional letters using a block style.

2.    Establish a vanishing point.

3.    Draw letters of your name and extend lines to the vanishing point to show that the letters are three dimensional and illustrate form.

4.    Add a creative element to the name by adding more drawing as well as color and value.
