What Is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a one-on-one instructional intervention for first graders who have difficulties learning to read. These struggling readers receive one-on-one instruction in reading and writing 30 minutes each day for approximately 12 to 20 weeks.

Reading Recovery does not take the place of classroom instruction. This intervention teaches the child to be a critical thinker equipped with a set of strategies for problem solving while working with text. During the program, students gain confidence, independence and fluency.

Reading Recovery teachers are specially trained during an intensive, yearlong program. As a result, they are highly skilled in designing lessons tailored specifically for each child’s needs. Starting with what the child knows, Reading recovery teachers reflect daily on ways to increase the child’s understanding. These teachers continue to expand their knowledge and proficiency through ongoing professional development sessions.
