****STUDENT SUPPLIES NEEDED: FOLDER WITH NOTEBOOK PAPER

OBJECTIVE:

Pre-test to determine levels in math, reading, & editing using SC HSAP

To improve study and test taking skills

 

Monday:

Objective: To improve study and test taking skills

Procedures: Student will complete a Learning Styles Inventory to determine 2 or 3 of his/her dominate learning styles. After determining the style(s) students will list 2 or 3 techniques to strengthen and implement each learning style

Assessment: Teacher observation

 

Tuesday:

Objective: To introduce criteria for journal entries (will use on Friday)

      To develop an essay draft using a storyboard (pre-writing)

Procedure:

1. The teacher will orally review and discuss future journal entries.  On the first page of his/her journal the students will write the journal guidelines for daily assignments in his/her journals.

2. Using the journal topic “If you had no limits, what career would be your career and why

Procedure: The student will read The Making of a Marine and excerpt from A Shot Heard “Round and answer questions provided as a diagnostic tool (#43-60)

Procedure:

1. Bell work: (1st 10 minutes) HSAP Math page 39 # 42 & 43 and page 40 # 45 & 46

2. The teacher will review journal

3. The students will read from Scholastic Action Magazine.

4. Given the writing prompt the students will write JOURNAL # 3 in his/her journals.

5. The students will complete any remaining resource tasks for the week and any tasks assigned by regular education teachers.

FRIDAY:

Procedure:

1. Bell work:  (1st 10 minutes)  review capitalization (WS)

2. The teacher will review essay criteria worksheet ( introduction, body/support, closing)

2. Using the storyboard from “How Well Do You Know Your Parents” the students will write an essay in his/her classroom folder. (Do not assign the number of paragraphs needed!)

3. The students will prepare for any upcoming tests & or complete any remaining tasks assigned by regular education teachers.

MONDAY- LABOR DAY HOLIDAY

OBJECTIVES:

To find the % of a number (amount of savings)

Transition: To improve written expression

To be able to use commas accurately in a sentence.

Improve reading comprehension skills (details) and content vocabulary

 

Tuesday:

Objective: Bell Work-  To determine the % of a number (amount of savings)

                                To improve written expression

Procedure:

The teacher will then demonstrate the correct procedure for determining % saving. The students will complete HSAP Math page 28 # 1-5, 11 & 12.

The students will review the 3 part essay format and journal entry criteria.

Using his/her journals the students will write an essay, “Holiday Weekend”.

 

Wednesday:

Objective: Bell work: To determine sale tax (word problems)

                             To improve reading comprehension

                               To improve written expression (opinion)       

 

Procedures:

The teacher will then demonstrate the correct procedure for determining sale tax or an item/items.  Students will then compute the sales taxes completing # 1 & 3 on page 46 in the HSAP Math Review.

The teacher will orally read a selection from Scholastic Scope Magazine and the students will write (Journal # 5) “Divided We Learn”- opinion essay. Assessment:  The grade will be determined by the number of correct responses.

 

Thursday and Friday

Objectives: To improve math skills (calculate sales prices)

Procedures:  BW- Using HSAP: Math pages 40 and 34 the students will determine cost of items on sale;

Introduce “Not Without My Daughter” and listen to the introduction to the video

Students will work on necessary assignments and exams not completed during the week for regular education and resource classes.

The students will discuss cultural differences in the Middle East and the women’s “place” and “rights”. The students will also discuss duel citizenship of children. The student will view part of the video “Not Without My Daughter” and answer comprehensive questions.

PROCEDURES:  After the teacher reviews the important points of completing a job application correctly, students will be given a job application to complete.  This is the third time the students have done this activity.  The students will be asked to complete this application without any help from the teacher.  They may have another student or students check over it to ensure that all blanks are completed.

ASSESSMENT:  If the application is completed correctly, the student will receive a hundred.  If the application is not completed correctly, it will be returned until the application is complete.

 

THURSDAY:

OBJECTIVES: To improve written expression

 To improve comprehension using a variety of text presentations

PROCEDURES: Jl # 5- 3 PART ESSSAY “9/11”

The students will discuss cultural differences in the Middle East and the women’s “place” and “rights”. The students will also discuss duel citizenship of children. The student will view last part of the video “Not Without My Daughter” and answer comprehensive questions.

ASSESSMENT:  Grade based on the number of correct answers

 

FRIDAY:  

OBJECTIVES: To improve written expression

o improve written expression (3 part essay)

Procedures: JL # 7- “Not Without My Daughter” (women’s right, religion, duel citizenship)

 The teacher will introduce the writing prompt: How would have handled the issues of not being able to take a child out of a foreign country?  Teacher and Students will review and make a list of political issues and family rights (pre-writing). The students will write a draft or draw/complete a Venn diagram and edit. The student will write a “final” journal entry and submit.

Students will work on necessary assignments and exams not completed during the week for regular education and resource classes.

Assessment:  Teacher made rubric

Procedure: Using Newsweek Magazine: Special Report- China’s Century the students will read pages 28-32 and discuss “Does the Future Belong to China?”,  Students will complete WS ”China’s  Century”.

TUESDAY:

OBJECTIVE: To improve reading comprehension-vocabulary (dictionary skills/context clues)

 PROCEDURE: The students will review the article “China’s Century” from Newsweek’s Magazine.  Using the WS of vocabulary words from the articles, the students will define the vocabulary words using context clues and the dictionary. The student will write a complete sentence using each vocabulary word.

WEDNESDAY:

OBJECTIVE: To improve math calculation skills ( inequalities) 

PROCEDURE: The teacher and students will review correct procedures for determining the value of an unknown in algebraic equations (inequalities).

The student s will complete # 1-6 on page 110 form HSAP Math.

THURSDAY:

OBJECTIVE: To improve audio-visual skills

PROCEDURE: Students will listen to VCR 60 Minutes News Report “Too Many Men” Students will discuss and construct a “writing web” listing   five problems and five solutions to China’s policy “one child per family”. The students will write an essay discussing the problems and possible solutions to China’s population problems.

PROCEDURE: The students will view the last 1/3 of the DVD Freedom Writers and  discussion 3 different presentations of materials from a true story: movie reviews (short critiques’), plays (scripts) and DVD’s (novel/long script) the students will write a Journal  Freedom Writers (JL # 11)

 Game: After a class discussion and vocabulary review the students will be introduced to the Freedom Writers Diary game “Take a Stand”. The Students will make a list of 5 “Agree” and 5 “Disagree” to take a stand (index cards). The students will “play” the game “Take a Stand”
