Science Lab Report Outline

Labs are to be written and kept in you marble composition and may be collected at any time. Every lab must have the following components:

Cover Sheet, consisting of Title, author,  Class, Date Due.

Lab Partner(s)
Lab Date
Lab Day Weather
Introduction:
What do you expect to learn?
What is the purpose of the lab?
The Problem

Background Information: 
What do you need to know in order to understand the lab?

Hypothesis: 
Predict the outcome(s) of the experiment—this may or may not be directly stated in the directions.  A cause and effect statement

Materials:
What equipment and materials did you need for this lab assignment? (as a list)

Procedures: 
What steps did you take to accomplish this lab assignment?  Any one should be able to reproduce repeat your experiment from these steps.

Data Recording:
Record the data that is required at each step of the lab—tables, charts, graphs, sketches, etc.
No complete sentences. 
Label your charts and tables (Table I, Graph II etc.)

Analysis:
Explain you data in words

Discussion: 
Discuss what happened in the lab.
Give details on anything that went wrong. Do not just tell what went wrong; explain why it went wrong.
List a minimum of 4 sources of error and explain why they are sources of error. 
Answer any lab questions here (if any)—write out the question and then the answer.)

Conclusion:
What did you learn?
What conclusions can you draw from the results of this assignment?
Compare the results of the experiment with your hypothesis. 
How does the experiment relate to everyday life?

 

Laboratory Write-up must follow the MLA Style, some are listed below

The write up must be:

  1. Typed and double spaced,
  2. Times New Roman and 12 Point.
  3. The Margins are 2.54 centimeters (1 inch) all the way around.
  4. The Paper must have:
    - Cover Sheet
  5. All sources must be cited, including your textbook.
