The History of South Carolina in the Building of the Nation by Archie Vernon Huff, Jr.

Course Description:

Eighth grade social studies focuses on the history of South Carolina and the role that the state and its people have played in the development of the United States.  South Carolina Grade 8 Social Studies Standards will guide the instruction for this course.

Evaluations and Grades:

-      Tests and projects count twice.

-      Quizzes, homework, and classwork assignments count once.

-      Nine weeks’ tests and semester exams will count 20% of that marking period’s grade.

-      Bell work will be given at the beginning of each class.  Students are expected to come into class and start on this work immediately.  There will be two questions on the board each day.  The questions may be review or students may be expected to read to obtain the answers.  Bell work will count 10 points a day.  They will be collected after 10 days and students will receive a classwork grade.  Grading system for bell work:

Writing the question –                                                 2 pts. x 2 = 4 pts.

Writing the answer in a complete sentence –                 1pt. x 2 =    2 pts.

Answering the question correctly -                     2 pts. x 2 = 4 pts.

Total points per day = 10 pts.

-      You are expected to take and keep up with notes in a single subject spiral notebook.  Each day of notes should be dated and have a unit number.  Notebooks will be graded at the end of each unit.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the notes you missed.

-      Students will also need a ½ inch binder with 3 dividers.  This notebook will be divided into the following sections: (1) bell work (2) graded worksheets/ workbook pages (3) miscellaneous/non-graded worksheets and assignments.

-      Students will be given homework as needed.  Parents, please check your student’s agenda daily to see what assignments need to be completed or upcoming tests.  Tests are assigned approximately a week in advance.

-      Students are expected to keep up with their grades.  I return everything except tests for students to keep.  I am available before or after school to help students with their averages – not during class.
