Figurative Language

Introduction

I don’t mean to burst your bubble, but you have a project to complete!

For the next several days we will be learning about figurative language.  This project will allow you to discover some of the devices of figurative language.  You will receive 8 grades from this project so it’s very important that you follow all directions given and you come to school everyday so as to not miss out on the fun. 


Task

You have 5 tasks to complete and a Bonus Task

After completing each task, turn in the task with your project folder.

1.    Using the links provided find and copy 2 examples of each figurative language device: ONOMATOPEIA, IDIOM, SIMILIE, METAPHOR, HYPERBOLE, PERSONIFICAITON and ALLITERATION.

 

2.  You will embark on a literary scavenger hunt in order to discover how the authors use onomatopoeia, idiom, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, and alliteration to convey thoughts and feelings.

 

3.  Create your own examples.  You will create 2 of your own for each category. That means you will create: 2 examples of onomatopoeia, 2 idioms, 2 similes, 2 metaphors, 2 hyperboles, 2 personifications, and 2 alliterations.

 

4.  WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

 

5.  FINAL PROJECT

With your partner, create a PowerPoint presentation of your examples.

 

Process

**You will need to print each document as you move through the project.

Task 1

 

Using the links provided fill in the worksheet your teacher gave you.  You may need to use other resources to find at least 2 examples for each device.  Some places you can look are your reading book, your AR book, magazines, and advertisements.  Go to the link below and print this worksheet.

Using your definitions from task 1, create 2 NEW and ORIGINAL examples of each type of figurative language device.

Task 5

Between your and your partner, you will choose the best example to each type of figurative device.  You will publish your best example in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
