Supporting Your Child At Home

Reading

Reading practice is very important.  Listening to your child read everyday helps to improve their reading.  Each day your child will bring books home to read.  Please take 10-15 minutes to listen to your child read.

Here are some helpful hints to remember when helping your child read:

When your child is reading and encounters an unknown word tell him/her…

&     To look at the picture

&     To think what the story is about

&      “Get your mouth ready” ( for the sound at the beginning of  the word)

&     Go back to the beginning of the sentence and read it again

&    Take a guess

&     Read the rest of the sentence

&     Ask your child if the guess makes sense with the whole sentence

&     Reassure your child that if the guessed word makes sense and looks right, then s/he did a good job!

Cut-up Sentence

  1. Listen to your child read the complete sentence that I have printed on the envelope.  If s/he has forgotten the sentence, tell your child the sentence and have your child repeat it.

  2. Watch your child put the cut-up pieces back into the correct order.  If they are having difficulty putting the sentence back together they may use the envelope as a guide.

  3. After the sentence is put back together, ask your child to check it against the sentence on the envelope to make sure it is correct and have your child read it to you.

  4. Please do not use the words as flash cards or expect your child to read the words without the entire sentence being present.

  5. If a word is underlined on the envelope check that your child has practiced saying the word, writing the word, and reading the word 5 times (use the back of the envelope for this practice).
