PARENT INFORMATION HANDOUT

Grades: 30% laboratories (approximately 7 per quarter)
50% tests - quizzes are weighted
or averaged together to give one test grade
homework is averaged to give one test grade
20% exam
I have asked students
to keep records of all assignments and grades in the agenda book. Students wishing to improve a grade below “C”
will have the opportunity to do so by keeping a notebook, staying after school
or coming before school and discussing their work with me and correcting the
mistakes they made on their test.
IB Assessments: The IB program requires all students have a portfolio
of laboratory work. This includes both
formal and informal laboratory assignments.
Formal Laboratory pieces will comprise 24% of the IB grade and are
assessed internally with moderation by IB.
Senior year portfolio samples will be submitted to IB and students will
complete a Chemistry Exam which is in three parts. Core material (same for all students) has a
multiple choice part and an open ended questions and problems part. The third part is options. Our options are biochemistry and environmental
chemistry (both contain material on the higher level Biology exam.) A final IB grade comes from these four parts
and 4 is considered average.
Laboratory requires all
students to follow the appropriate safety rules. By district policy all students must take a
lab safety test and pass with a minimum of 80%.
