SECTION A. (Overview)

Background Information

Number of classes: 6

Time of each class:  90 minutes

Grade Level:  9th

Number of Students: Approximately 30 students per class

Entry level of learner:

Age: 14-15 years old

Interests:  There is a wide range of activities that students of this age are interested in.  Many of them do enjoy playing sports, while others would rather just be in class for the social aspect.  Students at this age are beginning to draw interest from the opposite sex, and they too are interested in the opposite sex.  Students at this age are very interested in video games, and spend lots of their free time playing them.  Most students will be focused on the volleyball unit, because it has proven to be a lot of fun for the children each year.

General abilities:  The students should not really have a problem understanding the directions and rules of volleyball.  Most of them should be able to perform all of the tasks that they will be learning in this unit.  Some of the students will have some experience in volleyball and will be encouraged to help the students who have never played before.

Previous experience: Most of the students will have participated in volleyball before.  They should know most of the techniques that we will be using in this class.  Some of the students will have had experience playing volleyball outside of school, and will already have a basic knowledge for the sport.

Rationale:  The purpose of this unit is to promote physical activity, and teamwork.  This unit will help the student learn the sport of volleyball, and give them the opportunity to play the sport outside of the physical education class.

Resources, Equipment, and Materials

-gymnasium with two volleyball courts set up

- volleyballs both practice and game balls, and volleyball nets

Anticipated difficulties and how they will be addressed

The students will have to learn safety while playing volleyball.  The ball is to be rolled under the net not thrown over.  Some students might have a tough time learning the rules and skills of the game.  The more advanced players in the class will be teamed up with them so that they can become better at their skills.
