ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM GUIDANCE

Florence Darlington Technical College offers TechStart

Florence Darlington Technical College is offering a FREE two-week summer workshop for students who will start attending FDTC in the fall.  This workshop is designed for students that have tested into developmental studies.  This workshop will provide intensive review in English, math and reading for students who wish to improve their skills. 

The workshop will meet 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 19-30.  The program includes class work, special presentations, and performances prizes. 

At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to retake entrance tests and possibly exempt one or two courses.  Apply soon- seating is limited!  A brochure with more information and an application form is available in Guidance. 

 

Applications for Cosmetology and Health Careers are available in Guidance

Students interested in registering for Cosmetology I (current 10th graders/rising 11th graders) must complete an admission application and return it to Mrs. McBride by Friday, March 19.

Junior Conferences to Begin on October 21

Juniors will receive a copy of their transcript, an information sheet and a note for parents to schedule an IGP conference with their student’s Guidance Counselor when they met with a member of the Guidance staff beginning on October 21.  View Junior Information sheet here.

 

It is Time for Parents of Juniors to Schedule an IGP Conference

 To comply with the Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) passed in 2005, South Carolina Department of Education requests that all parent/guardian’s or parental designees attend the Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) conference with a designated Guidance Counselor.  Parents of juniors are reminded to contact their students’ Guidance Counselor at 664-8197 or email to schedule an appointment.

South Carolina AHEC Summer Careers Academy

The SC AHEC Summer Careers Academy will be held June 6-11, 2010 on the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC.  The participants will take part in 6 days of interaction with practicing health care professionals.  Applications and further details are available at www.scahec.net under Health Careers Program link.

Next Step Magazine Available Online

Student Loan Information

 

SC Student Loan applications for the SC Teacher Loan is on file in Guidance.  The SC Teacher Loan Program was established by the State of South Carolina to encourage talented and qualified students to enter the teaching profession and teach in the state in areas of critical needs.  The deadline for applying for next school year is April 15.  Applications are on file in Guidance or can be downloaded at www.scstudentloan.org.

Hugh O’Bryan Youth Leadership Seminar:  10th grade only.  Seminars are scheduled for the spring.  HOBY Leadership Seminars are designed for high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them to becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community.  More information is available at www.hoby.org.  Interested sophomores should see Mr. Gamble.

 

Rotary Youth Exchange Program:  Students interested in spending up to a year living with a few host families and attending school in a different country may visit www.rotary.org and click on the Students and Youth link or call 662-7783 for more information.

 

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship is a high school student exchange program fully funded by the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag (Parliament).  Each year, CIEE administers scholarships for American high school students to live and study in Germany on a one-year full scholarship.  For more details and to apply, visit www.USAGermanyScholarship.org.

South Carolina Business Week sponsored by the SC Chamber of Commerce:  Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores.  This summer program, July 11-16, 2010, is designed to teach high school students about entrepreneurship and the American free enterprise system.  Students ranked in the top one-third of their class are eligible to apply for this one week experience.  Applications and further details are on file in Guidance or can be downloaded at www.scchamber.net.

Broyhill Leadership Conference is open to rising 10th graders through college age students who are interested in personal development and leadership training.  Cost is only $220 for BLC Handbook, all meetings, 11 meals and four nights’ lodging.  The conference is June 28-July 2, 2010 at Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina.

 

University of Alabama Summer Programs:  The University of Alabama offers a variety of summer programs for all ages.  Information is on file in Guidance.

 

University Test Prep 2010 SAT/ACT Summer Institute is being offered by the University of South Carolina University Test Prep division.  These institutes will be offered at several USC campuses across the state this summer.  The SAT/ACT Summer Institute courses will include 20 hours of in-classroom instruction, led by a leading expert in the test preparation.  Please visit www.saeu.sc.edu/testing for further details and to register.

 

The University of South Carolina will offer the Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series, a summer academic camp for scholastically talented rising 6th-12th graders.  Carolina Master Scholars creates opportunities for young people to expand their knowledge while exposing them to many sides of collegiate life.  Starting June 6-July 16, 2010, eighteen challenging courses including Adventures in Medicine, Law and Criminology, Pharmacy, Forensic Science, Web Design and Development, Broadcast Journalism, Solar Robots, Writing, Robotics, Exercise Science and Social Work will be offered this summer.  For more information, applications and detailed class descriptions check out:  http://saeu.sc.edu/adventures/.

 

 

 

SCHOLARSHIPS

 

Harvard University announces that parents in families with incomes of less than $60,000 will no longer be expected to contribute to the cost of their children attending Harvard.  In addition, Harvard will reduce the contributions of families with incomes between $60,000 and $80,000.  To find out more information about Harvard offering free tuition for the families specified, visit Harvard’s financial aid website at http://www.fao.fas.harvard.edu/ or call the school’s financial aid office at (617) 495-1581.

 

Attention Class of 2011!!  Enter the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program for recognition and college scholarships by taking the 2009 PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 14 at South Florence High School.  Students may be eligible for the following scholarships:

·        The National Merit Scholarship Program is open to all high school students who meet published entry requirements.

·        The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition in which only Black American high school students participate.

The PSAT/NMSQT is the route of entry to NMSC programs.  Information about program entry requirements is available at www.nationalmerit.org.  Information is also posted in Guidance.

 

NROTC Scholarship Money for College:  Seniors.  NROTC scholarships are offered at more than 100 colleges and universities.  NROTC scholarships cover tuition and fees, plus money for textbooks and a $200 monthly subsistence.  There are over 60 leading colleges and universities with a NROTC unit.  Learn more at https://www.nrotc.navy.mil or www.navyjobs.com.   

 

Southern Wesleyan University:  A scholarship and grants program with institutional scholarships that range between $3,000 and $8,000 per year, renewable for up to four years is awarded to new applicants who met and maintain a minimum GPA while enrolled at SWU.  To apply for admissions and find out more information about this program, visit www.swu.edu.  

 

Spartanburg Methodist College:  Seniors only.  Students with a 3.0 GPA on the SC Uniform Grading Scale based on grades in a predominantly college prep curriculum and are Life Scholarship eligible will be offered a financial aid package equivalent to the cost of tuition.  A FAFSA must be completed by June 30th to be eligible for the full tuition.  For more information please contact SMC at 1-800-772-7286 or www.smcsc.edu.

Columbia College Division of Arts and Communications:  Female seniors.  Columbia College is offering scholarships to female seniors who are interested in pursuing a major in art, dance or music.  Interested students should contact Mrs. McBride in Guidance for further information.

Washington and Lee University:  Seniors.  Washington and Lee University offers the Johnson Scholarship Program to create increased accessibility to the education offered at the university.  W & L seeks outstanding students from all socioeconomic backgrounds to advance the national conversation on leadership, honor and ethics.  Learn more about the program at http://go.wlu.edu/johnson_scholars.  More information is also on file in Guidance. 

 

Duke University Trinity Scholarships: Seniors.  The merit-based Trinity Scholarships were established to honor Duke’s origins.  These scholarships provide full tuition, fees, room, board and summer study, work or travel experiences.  To learn how you can apply for Trinity Scholarships, please visit www.trinityscholars.dukealumni.com.

 

South Carolina Career and Technology Education Administration Division of SCACTE will be offering scholarships in the amount of $1000.  To be eligible the student must be a South Carolina high school senior and an occupational completer having earned four or more occupation Carnegie units of credit.  More information and applications are on file in Guidance or at www.scasa.org.

Attention seniors enrolled in JAG this school year, you may be eligible for a scholarship to pursue a degree or certificate at a public or private two-year community college, technical college, public or private four-year college/university or an apprenticeship or trade school.  Please see Ms. Jett for further details and an application.

 

AES Engineering:  $500 scholarship to high school seniors.  AES Engineering believes that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped.  For that reason they are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted.  Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to one of the two questions below:

1.      If you had the authority to change your school in a positive way, what specific changes would you make?

2.      How has your family background affected the way you see the world?

Select Health of South Carolina announces the First Choice/First Choice Kids Member Scholarship Program.  This program will award two annual scholarships, for up to $2000 for one year’s tuition payment, to selected First Choice and First Choice Kids members who plan to continue their education and meet the criteria.  Further information and applications are on file in Guidance or may be accessed at www.selecthealthofsc.com/firstchoice.

 

Osbbie Scipio Allstate Insurance Bowl 4 Education Scholarship:  Osbbie Scipio Allstate Insurance is offering a $500 scholarship for college expenses to one senior from South Florence High School.  Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply:

·        A graduating senior for the 2009-2010 school year

·        Planning to attend a 4 year college or technical institution Fall 2010

·        Receiving free or reduced lunch

·        Cumulative B average or better

·        Active participant in extracurricular activities

·        Minimum SAT score of 1050 or ACT score of 21

·        Submit a 500 word essay- Why are you an ideal candidate for the Bowl 4 Education Scholarship?

Applications are available from Mrs. Lee in Guidance.  Entries should be submitted to Mrs. Lee in Guidance by May 3, 2010.

 

 

Pee Dee Minority Teacher Loan Program applications are on file in Guidance.  This program provides “forgivable” loans up to $1000 per year to attract minority students into the teaching profession.  If loan recipients are later employed in sponsoring districts, the loans are repaid by the school district.  Applications are on file in Guidance.  Deadline for submission is May 14, 2010.

 

The Wendy’s High School Heisman 2010 application is now available.  All rising senior athletes who work hard, are dedicated and have become role models for their school’s underclassmen.  Eligibility is limited to men and women entering their senior year of high school in the 2010-2011 academic year who have at least a “B” average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.  Apply online at www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com.  The deadline for submission is October 3, 2010.

 

The McLeod Regional Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary:  Seniors.  This scholarship for $500 per semester has been established to provide a Health Education Assistance Fund for a limited number of students.  To be eligible students must meet the following criteria:

·        Reside in the Pee Dee area

·        Plan to study a health-related career at an accredited college

·        Have at least a 3.0 GPA

·        Have earned at least a 21 on the ACT or an 800 on the SAT

·        Complete an application

·        Submit a transcript and personal recommendations

John T. (Jack) Sullivan Scholarship:  Seniors.  A $500 scholarship will be awarded to two students who will graduate in May 2010, are planning to attend college and have the need for financial aid.  Applications are on file in the Guidance office and completed application with requested attachments must be returned to Mrs. Page by Monday, April 26.    

 

Navy/Nurse ROTC Scholarships are available at over 160 colleges and universities across the country: Juniors only.   Navy ROTC scholarships pay for full tuition, textbooks, living expenses and much more.  Check out www.navy.com/careers/nrotc for more information or https://www.nrotc.navy.mil to apply.  A fact sheet is also on file in Guidance.

 

Florence Regional Arts Alliance Betty Ann Darby Scholarships:  Seniors.  Two $1000 scholarships are awarded To Florence County graduating seniors who will be pursuing advanced or professional degrees in arts disciplines or art education.  The application process requires submission of support materials that will serve as a representative sampling of each student’s talent in his/her major arts discipline.  Applications are on file in Guidance.  Applications must be turned into Mrs. Page by Friday, April 30, 2010. 

 

Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriotic Audio Essay Competition “Voice of Democracy”:  Students in grades 9-12.  Grand prize is a $30,000.  Record your original 3-5 minute essay on a standard cassette tape or CD on this year’s theme, Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?”  Your recording (labeled with your name), neatly typed essay and entry form must be provided to the local VFW Post for judging by midnight on November 1, 2010.  Entry forms are on file in Guidance.

 

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Spouses Scholarship Program:  Seniors.  The CBC Scholarship Fund Program provides financial assistance to help defray the escalating expenses of a college education.  The CBC Spouses Educational Scholarship is a national program that awards scholarships to academically talented and highly motivated students.  The program assists with tuitions costs in an effort to enable minority students to fulfill their dreams of obtaining a college degree.  Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale, demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership, particularly in community service activities and demonstrate financial need.  Official SAT or ACT scores must also be included.  The applicant must reside or attend school within the Sixth Congressional District represented by Congressman Jim Clyburn.  Completed applications should be postmarked by June 1, 2010.  Applications are on file in Guidance.

 

Housing Authority of Florence announces the availability of scholarships for seniors who have resided in publicly assisted housing for a minimum of one uninterrupted year.  Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and enrolled in a one, two or more year course at a school of higher learning.  Applications are on file in Guidance.  Deadline for submission to the Housing Authority of Florence is May 7, 2010.

The Florence Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Amicae Auxillary:  Minority Female Seniors.  This scholarship provides financial assistance to academically talented and highly motivated minority female students to enable them to fulfill their dream of obtaining a college degree.  Applications are on file in Guidance.  Application deadline is May 15.
